EVANS, JOHN CEREDIG (1855 - 1936), Calvinistic Methodist missionary, tutor, and author

Born March 1855 at New Quay, Cardiganshire. He attended the local school, and went to sea, but at 21 prepared for the ministry at Llandysul grammar school kept by Thomas James, 1834 - 1915, University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and the University of Glasgow. Ordained in 1885, he settled at Gilead, Nant-y-moel, Glamorganshire. He married Sarah Williams of Llandysul. He offered himself for the Foreign Mission and sailed for India in 1887. He was appointed to the headship of the Cherra Normal School, Khasi Hills, and also taught at the theological college. Upon the fusion of this school with the Government's higher grade school in Shillong (1891) he was put in charge, and held this post for twenty-five years. He served as a minister and an area treasurer, helped with the revision of the Khasi Bible, and published a new edition of the Khasi Hymnary. Twice a recipient of Government recognition for his work, he was also appointed to the Legislative Assembly. He was elected in 1921 moderator of the C.M. General Assembly and of the C.M. English Conference. He retired in 1931 and died at New Quay, 22 May 1936.
