EVANS, SAMUEL
(Gomerydd; 1793 - 1856), editor
Born at Llwyn-y-piod, near St Clears. In 1807 he was apprenticed to the printer John Evans, of Carmarthen. On the death of Joseph Harris (Gomer) in 1825 the office of
Seren
Gomer was removed to Carmarthen and in 1827 Samuel Evans was appointed associate-editor with D. D. Evans, becoming sole editor in 1835. He remained in this post till 1850, when he was acknowledged to be one of the foremost
HUGHES, HUGH

Seren
Gomer, 1828, a scathing attack upon the Calvinistic Methodist authorities and particularly upon John Elias - the articles were re-issued in pamphlet form, Y Trefnyddion a'r Pabyddion. Later (in

Gomer, 1830-2), under the pen-name 'Cristion,' he battled with Evan Evans, Ieuan Glan Geirionydd (1795 - 1856) on tithe, churchrate, and Church establishment in general. He continued for a while to
LLWYD, STEPHEN
(1794 - 1854), musician
became precentor of Carmel Baptist chapel; he also conducted music classes in the district. His hymn-tune 'Caerllyngoed,' first appeared in
Seren
Gomer, June 1822; other hymn-tunes composed by him ('Abergwaun,' 'Taf,' and 'Rhondda') were published in
Seren
Gomer whilst a 'Carol Nadolig,' arranged by D. Emlyn Evans, appeared in Cronicl y Cerddor, December 1882. He died in April 1854, at the age of 60
DAVIES, JAMES
(Iago ap Dewi; 1800 - 1869), printer and poet
Born near Pencader, Carmarthenshire, he received no educational advantages when a child, and spent his youth as a farm labourer. He joined the Pencader Congregational church. At about 20, he forsook farming, and became an apprentice with John Evans, printer, Carmarthen, of the
Seren
Gomer office. Here he met kindred spirits with a love for the muse, e.g. W. E. Jones (Gwilym Cawrdaf) and William
LLOYD, JOHN
(Einion Môn; 1792 - 1834), schoolmaster and poet
that Society; and when clerics in Wales attacked the society, Lloyd, in 1829, composed a reply to these ' brainless chatterers ' as he called them. The reports of Cymreigyddion meetings, in
Seren
Gomer, show that he also lectured to the society. But in 1832 we find him, in company with Griffith Davies, F.R.S., protesting vigorously against the increasingly Radical tone of the society - see the debate
EDWARDS, WILLIAM
(Gwilym Callestr, Wil Ysgeifiog; 1790 - 1855), poet
for an awdl (
Seren
Gomer, 1832, 312), and at Mold, 1823, for an englyn. His elegy on Thomas Price (Carnhuanawc) in 1853, printed in Golud yr Oes, 1863, 112-3), was written in the asylum. Much of his work is scattered through the pages of
Seren
Gomer, Y Gwladgarwr, Yr Eurgrawn, Y Geninen, and Cymru (O.M.E.). He published a volume, Cell Callestr (Trefriw, 1815), of his own poetry and that of others
THOMAS, THOMAS EMLYN
(Taliesin Craig-y-felin; 1822 - 1846), Unitarian minister, poet, and schoolmaster
Born November 1822 at Pen-y-graig (Pengraigwnda), in the parish of Penbryn, Cardiganshire, son of David and Elizabeth Thomas. He was educated at a school which the rector maintained at his own expense at Troedyraur, at Ffrwd-y-fâl, and at Carmarthen Academy (1839-43). In 1843 he was ordained minister of the Unitarian churches at Cribin and Ciliau Aeron (see

OWEN, MORRIS BRYNLLWYN
(1875 - 1949), minister (B), college professor, church historian
use his knowledge of the Greek and Latin Fathers: he was also the librarian of the college. In addition he was pastor (from 1925) of the Baptist churches at Felin-wen and Felin-gwm and editor of
Seren
Cymru, 1930-33. He was a quiet, shy, studious person but at the Baptist Union meetings at Caernarfon in 1937 he suddenly came to the fore with an address to the Hist. Soc. on the place of Christmas
HUMPHREYS, BENJAMIN
(1856 - 1934), Baptist minister
from the chair of the Welsh Baptist Union (1926), ' Y Bedyddwyr: Eu Hegwyddorion Gwahaniaethol a'u Rhagolygon.' He edited
Seren
yr Ysgol Sul for many years and was offered, but refused, the editorship of
Seren
Gomer. He was a theologian, commentator, and historian, as is shown by his commentaries on the epistles to the Philippians and the Colossians, his Hanes Bedyddwyr Felinfoel, 1909, and his
MORGAN, JOHN RHYS
(Lleurwg; 1822 - 1900), Baptist minister, lecturer, poet, and littérateur
eloquent speaker on the Liberal platform, but is probably best remembered for his popular lectures, of which at least thirty subjects have been recorded. In addition, he was an eisteddfod adjudicator, co-editor of Y Medelwr Ieuanc, which was first published in 1871, and editor of the poetry section of
Seren
Cymru from 1860 to 1877, and
Seren
Gomer in the early 1860's, but owing to his multiplicity of
BOWEN, DAVID
(Myfyr Hefin; 1874 - 1955), minister (B) and editor
Cerddi Brycheiniog (1912). In 1913 he moved to Horeb chapel, Five Roads, near Llanelli. He was Welsh editor of the Llanelly Mercury between 1915 and 1942, and of
Seren
yr Ysgol Sul from the same press, 1916-50. He established Urdd y
Seren
Fore in 1929, and the provision of reading material for children in Welsh was one of his chief aims. He was a member of the Gorsedd of Bards from 1897 until his death
RHYS, WILLIAM JOSEPH
(1880 - 1967), minister (B) and author
Gelli, Rhondda. He began taking an interest, it appears, in the history of his denomination when he was about fifty years old. For the 30 years following the publication in
Seren
Gomer (1934-35) of a histo ry of the Baptists at Landore, he wrote articles regularly for
Seren
Cymru, Trafodion Cymdeithas Hanes Bedyddwyr Cymru, and
Seren
Gomer, and supplied a chronicle of church events regularly to the
