WALTERS, IRWYN RANALD
(1902 - 1992), musician and administrator
Irwyn
Walters was born on 6 December 1902 in Ammanford, the second of six children of William Walters and his wife Elizabeth (née Morgan). His father kept a tobacconist and newsagent's shop at Clifton House on the town square; he was also a keen solfaist and precentor at the Ebeneser Baptist chapel.

Gareth Walters was born in Swansea on 27 December 1928, the son of
Irwyn
R. Walters (1902-1992) and his wife Margaret Jane (née Edwards). He began composing while still at school, and was encouraged by Benjamin Britten, a friend of the family. In 1949 he enrolled as a student at the Royal Academy of Music and in 1952 went to Paris on a scholarship to the Conservatoire Nationale, where he studied
