GRUFFYDD ap MADOG
(d. 1191)
son of Madog ap Maredudd by Susanna, daughter of Gruffudd ap Cynan, and the founder of the principal ruling family of northern Powys during the 13th century. When the province was divided into two spheres of influence on the death of Madog ap Maredudd in 1160, territories north of the Rhaeadr were subject to further subdivision among

HYWEL ap GRUFFYDD ap IORWERTH

According to a story recorded by Robert Vaughan of Hengwrt about 1650, Hywel ap
Gruffydd

His mother was said to have nursed Edward II after his birth at Caernarvon in 1284; as a result, Hywel enjoyed the favour of the king and was knighted by him. He was a man of great physical strength, able to

He is first heard of in 1138, when, with his brother Anarawd and Owain and Cadwaladr of Gwynedd, he brought a Viking fleet of fifteen ships, no doubt from Dublin, to the mouth of the Teify, in a vain endeavour to capture Cardigan, the last foothold left to the Normans in Ceredigion. During the next few years he was overshadowed by his elder brother, but
