HUGHES, ROBERT OWEN (Elfyn; 1858 - 1919), journalist and poet Cymru (O.M.E.); Sir Owen M. Edwards, editor of the latter, included Hanes Bywyd Capelulo, written by Elfyn, in 'Cyfres y Fil.' A selection of his poems was issued under the title of Caniadau Elfyn (n.d.). He died 14 June 1919 and was buried in Llan Ffestiniog churchyard.
EDWARDS, JOHN KELT (1875 - 1934), artist . Hughes (Elfyn), Ellis H. Evans (Hedd Wyn), and others. After the war of 1914-18 he designed the banner and the badge of the 'Comrades of the Great War' and the roll of honour of the Royal Welch Fusiliers; he had also produced some war cartoons. JONES, ABEL (Bardd Crwst; 1830 - 1901), ballad writer and strolling ballad singer Born at Llanrwst, son of Abel Jones, 'carrier,' and of his wife Jane - both died, aged 74, in 1876; his brother William (died 1893) was also a 'character.' Abel was a one-eyed man; there is a portrait of him in Cymru (O.M.E.), xxvii, 173 and in Cerddi Cymru (n.d.), vol. i. He is known to have been singing at least as early as 1864, and Elfyn (R.O. Hughes) heard him singing at Abergele in the
WILLIAMS, THOMAS (Capelulo; c.1782 - 1855), reformed drunkard, itinerant bookseller, 'character' and ballads, almanacks and books. Most of what is known of 'Capelulo' is found in his autobiography (Hanes bywyd Thomas Williams, yr hwn a adwaenid wrth yr enw Thomas Capelulo. A ysgrifenwyd o'i enau ef ei hun) published by John Jones in 1854. This is a literary version of what the author said 'in his own words' and its honesty is a remarkable feature. DAVIES, ALUN TALFAN (1913 - 2000), barrister, judge, politician, publisher and businessman Alun Talfan Davies was born on 22 July 1913 in Gorseinon near Swansea, the youngest of four sons of William Talfan Davies (1873-1938), a Methodist minister, and his wife Alys (née Jones, 1879-1948).
