Born 27 February 1901, at Glan-llyn, Llanbryn-Mair, the home of his parents George Howard and Elizabeth Peate (née Thomas). His elder brother Dafydd Morgan Peate (born 1898) became a bank manager and his younger sister Morfudd Ann
