Alban's Hall, Oxford, in 1668, 'aged 22,' and graduated in 1672; he was vicar of Llanbryn-mair (1681-9) and rector of Penegoes (1689-95); from 1691 to 1695 he was also a prebendary of St Asaph cathedral. In spite of his great popularity as a preacher, his progress to the principal offices of his denomination was painfully slow - it was not until 1868 that he became moderator of his Association, and he had to wait until 1878 before becoming moderator of the General Assembly.
