Born at Tyn-y-gors, Nantglyn, Denbighshire, 10 June 1860, son of Thomas and Margaret Jones - the mother belonging to the Tyn-y-gors family and the father to that of Llidiard-ygwartheg, Cerrig-y-drudion. He was brought up by his grandparents, moving to Tai-isaf in 1872. He had six months schooling at Pentrefoelas and two periods of six months each at Cerrig-y-drudion. He married
