THOMAS, RICHARD

Born 10 December 1753, son of Thomas Rowland, Tuhwnt i'r Bwlch, parish of Ynyscynhaearn, Caernarfonshire, and Jane (Jones), his wife (J. E.

, Pedigrees, 359). He was a pupil at Friars School, Bangor, before he went to Jesus College, Oxford (matriculated 28 November 1771, B.A. 1775). Towards the end of 1777 he became curate at Llanegryn, Meironnydd, and master at the school there - and

(c. 1887 - 1959), newspaper proprietor
Montgomeryshire Express, and in 1932 developed the Welsh language newspaper Y Cymro (formerly of Dolgellau) as a national weekly paper for Wales. In 1921 he acquired the Welsh book publishing company of

and Son, and the Principality Press, Wrexham. Although he did not speak Welsh, he did all in his power to sustain the language. On the advice of a panel of leading Welsh scholars and authors he printed

. He became a pupil-teacher there, but, following an altercation with his headmaster, he left to continue his education at Talgarreg school. Being a frail child his parents were advised to send him for a period to New Quay where there was a noted grammar school kept by C.J.

Jones were ordained co-pastors of Pant Teg - ironically enough, Thomas took part in the ordination service of Titus Lewis at Blaen-y-waun, Pembrokeshire, in 1797. In the schism of 1799, Thomas and the Arminian party retained possession of Pant Teg chapel, which is today one of the three chapels which alone in Wales bear the designation ' General Baptist ' - see under Evan Lloyd
