RICHARDS, THOMAS
(1754 - 1837), cleric
Born at Hirnant, Pont Erwyd, Cardiganshire, 24 April 1754, son of Richard Thomas and Jane his wife. At the age of 19 he went to Ystradmeurig, where he met Thomas Jones (of Creaton) (1752 - 1845). The two men formed an intimate friendship which lasted all their days. Richards kept school at Tal-y-bont, Cardiganshire, for three years, and in 1779 he married Jane, daughter of David
Lloyd
of Cymerau
RICHARDS, WILLIAM
(1749 - 1818), General Baptist minister, theological and political controversialist, and antiquary
impoverished him. He first aroused public notice (1781) in debates on baptism, with English Independents; and from 1788 till 1791 he and Benjamin Evans of Dre-wen (1740 - 1821) contended in Welsh on this subject. It must be confessed that Richards, in his debates, would lose all self-control; his sufficiently prickly fellow-heretic Charles
Lloyd
could say of him that 'his irritability was incredible
RICHARDSON, EVAN
(1759 - 1824), Calvinistic Methodist minister, and schoolmaster
John Elias and Sir Hugh Owen, Richardson gave up the school when in 1817 his health began to fail, and was succeeded by William
Lloyd
(1771 - 1841). Evan Richardson was also practically the founder of the Calvinistic Methodist cause at Caernarvon; the first Calvinistic Methodist sermon there had been delivered in 1786 by David Jones of Llangan, and in 1787 (while still living at Llangybi) Richardson
ROBERTS
family Mynydd-y-gof,
), daughter of Thomas Foulkes of Machynlleth, and niece of Simon
Lloyd
of Bala. Fortified by this dynastic connection with Methodism, he became, long before his death, the chief Calvinistic Methodist elder in Anglesey; a serious man, frugal though not miserly, somewhat autocratic - in a way an incarnation of the rather dour older Methodism of the island. He died 12 January 1869, ' in his 81st year ' says
ROBERTS, ARTHUR RHYS
(1872 - 1920), solicitor
. Having decided to pursue a legal career, he spent a period in articles with a Bangor solicitor, John Glynne Jones. Having passed the Law Society's final examinations in April 1894 (coming third out of all candidates in England and Wales) he qualified, at the age of 22, as a solicitor. His first appointment as a solicitor was in the offices of
Lloyd
George
and
George
, the firm of the local MP, David
ROBERTS, DAVID
(Alawydd; 1820 - 1872), quarryman and musician
the Carneddi musical society. He joined the Congregational chapel at Bethesda and, in time, became the leader of the church choir. He started a music class for the use of which he wrote a series of lessons. These lessons were shown to John Ambrose
Lloyd
and Edward Stephen (Tanymarian) on whose suggestion, together with the suggestion of the Carneddi musical society, they were published in 1848
ROBERTS, EMRYS OWEN
(1910 - 1990), Liberal politician and public servant
sharpness of his intellect and his conspicuous radical leanings. He focused on European affairs, the economy and Welsh affairs. Much of his time was inevitably taken up with internal party discussions on the political direction which the Liberals might take. Roberts generally shared the view of Lady Megan
Lloyd
George
(Anglesey) and Dingle Foot (Dundee) that it should lean more to the left. In this view
ROBERTS, GEORGE
(1769 - 1853), settler and Independent minister in U.S.A.
Richard Williams (1802 - 1842), and the grandmother of the antiquary Richard Williams (1835 - 1906). John Roberts's three sons, and his daughter Maria's son John Griffith (1821 - 1877), all separately noticed, round off the tale of this exceptionally interesting family.
George
Roberts's autobiography, written at intervals (1827, 1835, 1846, and 1850), begins with a very full account of his family and
ROBERTS, Sir GEORGE FOSSETT
(1870 - 1954), soldier, politician and administrator
ROBERTS, GLYN
(1904 - 1962), historian and administrator
Born 31 August 1904 at Bangor, Caernarfonshire, son of William and Ann Roberts, and educated at Friars School from 1915 to 1922 when he won a scholarship to the University College of North Wales, Bangor. He studied history under John Edward
Lloyd
and Arthur Herbert Dodd and graduated with first-class honours in 1925. He undertook research into the parliamentary history of the north Wales boroughs
ROBERTS, GORONWY OWEN
(Baron Goronwy-Roberts), (1913 - 1981), Labour politician
February 1974, he was at once created by Harold Wilson Baron Goronwy-Roberts of Caernarfon and Ogwen in the county of Caernarfon (life peerage), and assumed the surname of Goronwy-Roberts in lieu of Roberts. He was also re-appointed to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office by Harold Wilson in March 1974, serving until December 1975 under
George
Brown. He was then Minister of State at the Foreign Office
ROBERTS, GWEN REES
(1916 - 2002), missionary and teacher
a convoy of ships on what was a memorable journey. Despite the dangers of a wartime voyage, the Welsh among the missionaries kept up their spirits by walking the decks at night singing Welsh hymns. Gwen made lifelong friends, including Marian Prichard, who traveled to work as a senior nurse at the Shillong hospital in the Khasi Hills, and Revd Meirion
Lloyd
who accompanied Gwen on the journey
