(1884 - 1976), miner, trade unionist and local politician
Isaac Hayward was born on 17 November 1884 in a two-bedroomed terraced house in King Street, Blaenafon, Monmouthshire, the third of five children to survive out of eight born to Thomas Hayward (1848-1925), engine fitter, and his wife

. He was brought up in a musical family. He joined the Caernarvon Volunteers band and when he was only thirteen years old became its conductor. Possessed of a good baritone voice he began to compete as a soloist when he was seventeen and won several prizes. When he was twenty-one he went to the Royal College of Music, London
