Born 28 December 1832 at Pen-y-braich, near the Cae Braich y Cafn quarry, Bethesda, Caernarfonshire. He started to work in the quarry when he was only eight, received a year's schooling when he was twelve, and then resumed work in the quarry. Born in Llandwrog parish, Caernarfonshire, 2 August 1702. In 1728 at latest, he was a bookbinder in London. He and his wife joined the Moravian society in 1739. She died 5 December 1766, and at the end of 1767 he decided to return to his native region. It was he who brought Mrs. Alice
