and Margaret Edwardes of Rhydargaeau in the parish of Llanllawddog, Carmarthenshire. His father, a Dissenter, kept the village shop. Edwardes was probably educated locally before entering the University of Glasgow, where he distinguished himself as senior prizeman in moral philosophy, and was the silver medallist and prizeman in mental philosophy. In 1880 he married Catherine, daughter of David Davis, Maes-y-ffynnon, Aberdare; there was one daughter of the marriage.
