JONES, JOHN (1777 - 1842) Ystrad, politician described as 'a Tory in politics but in private life a Liberal.' There is a memorial to him in S. Peter's church, Carmarthen. The idea that the Carmarthen suburb, Johnstown, is named after him is erroneous.
JONES, JOHN EMRYS (1914 - 1991), secretary and organiser of Labour Party Wales the Labour Party in the south-west, 1949-60, the West Midlands, 1960-65, and for the Labour Party Wales from 1965 until his retirement in 1979. He was a regular at the 'Welsh night' at the Labour Party annual conferences and built up a close relationship with Jim Griffiths MP who was to become the first Secretary of State for Wales in 1964. JONES, JOHN MORGAN (1873 - 1946), minister (Congl.) and Principal of Bala-Bangor College, Bangor Harnack, the teacher who above all others made the most lasting impression upon him. He was ordained minister of Tabernacle English Congregational church, Aberdare, in 1900 and played a prominent part in the public life of the town during his stay there. JONES, JOHN SHARE (1873 - 1950), veterinary surgeon the Royal Veterinary College, and was President for one term. He was awarded the Steel memorial medal by that institution in 1928. He wrote a number of pamphlets and articles and acquired considerable fame in his field. JONES, JOHN TYWI (1870 - 1948), Baptist minister and journalist successor to Y Gwron; he later contributed regularly under the name ' Llewelyn'. Though a critic of political socialism, his Christian and liberal principles made him an unflinching advocate of workers' rights. JONES, JOSEPH (1877 - 1950), principal of the Memorial College, Brecon Committee. He was a member of the County Councils Association and a vice-president of the Federation of Education Committees. He figured prominently on the councils of the University of Wales, a member of the Court, Council and of the governing bodies of several of the colleges. He was Dean of Divinity 1931-1934. JONES, JOSIAH TOWYN (1858 - 1925), Congregational minister, and Member of Parliament a leading figure on the Liberal platform, in close alliance with T. E. Ellis and afterwards with David Lloyd George. In 1912 he became Member of Parliament for East Carmarthenshire, in 1917 Welsh Whip and Junior Lord of the Treasury. From 1918 he represented Llanelly in the Coalition Parliament, resigning his seat owing to ill-health in 1922. He died 16 November 1925 at Ammanford.
JONES, LEIFCHILD STRATTEN LEIF (1862 - 1939), Liberal politician and temperance advocate was Who). He went to Scotch College Melbourne before entering Oxford where he gained a M.A. degree in 1889. He became a member of the Privy Council in 1917; he was president of the United Kingdom Alliance (temperance movement) 1906-32, and president of the Liberal Council 1934-37. He changed his name to Leif-Jones 11 January 1932.
