His election in 1913 as chairman of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coalowners Association marked the beginning of a long period of prominence

, a Calvinistic Methodist exhorter in Cardiganshire. The father was a blacksmith and he is said to have practised his craft at Swyddffynnon, Esgair near Llangwyryfon, and Pen-y-graig, Llanrhystud.
