Born in Swansea. He spent his youth in the ironworks at Penydarren, Dowlais and Rhymney. In 1833 he went to South America to oversee gold and silver mines; he returned there later to research in the Andes and Panama; in 1852 he was in Australia as an advisor to a gold mining company. He was an expert on magnetic ores.
