Born 12 August 1882, at Pwll near Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, son of John and Elizabeth Rogers. He started preaching there at the age of 15 when he was a pupil at the county school. He won the Dan Isaac Davies prize and graduated with honours in Welsh at the University College, Cardiff. He won the college and other bardic chairs, but soon abandoned poetry for theology. He was ordained at Soar (B), Pontlotyn, in 1906, and served ministries at Rhos, Mountain Ash, 1908-1915, and at Gomer chapel, Swansea, 1915-48. He retired in 1948. His theological works include two volumes on eschatology - Y Deyrnas a'r Ail Ddyfodiad, 1914, and Athrawiaeth y Diwedd, 1934, the subject of his M.A. thesis. His commentary on the Book of Revelations appeared in 1944 and he published a volume of well-polished sermons entitled A'r Drws yn Gaead in 1948. He contributed much to periodicals and to Y Geiriadur Beiblaidd. His two useful works on the Welsh language, Llyfr gloywi Cymraeg, 1920, and Camre'r Gymraeg, 1926, became popular.
He was a member of the National Eisteddfod council, the Gorsedd of Bards, the B.B.C.'s religious advisory committee, and the Swansea public library committee. For a considerable period he was principal of the Ilston preparatory school, and was president of the Welsh Baptist Union for 1946-47. He edited the hymns for Llawlyfr Moliant Newydd, and was editor of Seren Cymru from 1936 until his death on 21 February 1950.
