Born 9 August 1881 at Edenbridge, Kent, son of W. Venis Robinson, minister (B), and his wife Emily Jane. He was educated at Mill Hill School; St. John's College, Cambridge; the Baptist College, Regent's Park, London; and Göttingen University. He was Litt.D. of Cambridge University and D.D. of London University. He was for a period Professor of Hebrew and Syriac at Serampore College, Bengal.
He came to Wales in 1915, as a lecturer in Semitic languages at the University College, Cardiff, being promoted Professor at Cardiff in 1927, where he remained until his retirement in 1944. He was Dean of Theology of the University of Wales, 1937-40. A number of honours were bestowed upon him, including being Schweich lecturer (1926), having an hon. D.D. degree conferred on him by the universities of Aberdeen and Wales and D. Theol. of the University of Halle-Wittemberg, and receiving the British Academy's Burkitt medal for Biblical Studies.
He made his name as the author of a number of standard books which were greatly needed in the field of Old Testament studies; among them were Prophecy and the prophets in the Old Testament (1923), The decline and fall of the Hebrew kingdoms (1926), Hebrew religion (1930) and A history of Israel (1932), the last two in collaboration with W.O.E. Oesterley. He published a number of books also on the Hebrew and Syriac languages.
His other considerable contribution was his enormous labour for the Society for Old Testament Study; he was its secretary for a very long period (1917-46) and president twice (in 1928 and 1946). After retiring he went to live in Ealing, and died 26 June 1964.
