JONES, GEORGE DANIEL (1877 - 1955), master printer

Born 1877 in Lampeter, Cardiganshire, the son of Daniel and Margaret (née Rees) Jones, Red Lion Fach, later of Harford Row, Lampeter, Cardiganshire. George was apprenticed to T.L. Davies, Caxton Press, Lampeter and thereafter joined the staff of a well-known firm of printers at Gloucester as an improver. Within a few years, on the advice of J. Gwenogvryn Evans, he joined the Oxford University Press, and soon both worked a small hand press to print some of the first volumes of Early Welsh Texts which Gwenogvryn published privately. At the end of September 1909 George Jones moved to Aberystwyth to set up the new National Library's printing press and remained until September 1925 when he accepted the post of Works' Manager with the Cambrian News.

Early in the 1930s he acquired The Montgomeryshire Printing and Stationery Co. in Newtown, and here he occasionally set some of the printing for the Gregynog Press. During this period he lost his only son and daughter - both teenagers. He retired to Aberystwyth towards the end of World War II and helped the Cambrian News during this critical period until shortly before his death 2 September 1955. He was buried in Aberystwyth's Public Cemetery. His widow, Dorothy, survived him.
