Born 18 February 1856, at Penmachno, son of Owen and Jane Jones. His father, a stone-mason by trade, became a member of a firm of contractors and was able to give his son a good education for that period, at the Llanrwst grammar school and Grove Park, Wrexham. Later, D. O. Jones went as a junior clerk to the N. and S.W. Bank in Liverpool, and on being promoted was transferred to the Newtown branch. In the absence of a Wesleyan church there he joined the Congregationalists. Although reputed to have written sermons at 15 years of age, it was while at Newtown that he started to preach, and with the Congregationalists to begin with, when he was 18. Later, he returned to Wesleyanism. He left his position at the bank in 1874 to minister to the church at Borth, Cardiganshire. His probationary period was spent in the Llanfyllin, Llanfaircaereinion, and Bangor circuits, and ended in 1879 (1875 in Asaph) when he was ordained. During that same year he married Jane Jones, eldest daughter of John P. Jones, Llanfairfechan. His ministerial career was as follows: Caerwys (1879); Penmachno (1880); Bethesda (1883); Birkenhead (1885); Manchester (1888); Liverpool (1891); Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant (1894); Manchester (1897); Liverpool (1899); Manchester (1902), and fifteen years of his ministry were spent in two circuits. An accomplished writer, he contributed articles to the denominational periodicals, and published a commentary on S. Mark's Gospel in 1902. A very pleasing personality, he was considered one of the leading preachers of his denomination. He died 7 August 1903 and was buried at Llanfairfechan.
