Born 9 March 1846 at Llwyn-y-grant (Pen-y-lan), Cardiff, the son of Daniel Thomas, builder. He studied chemistry for some years in the Royal College of Science, specialising in the analysis of coal-mine gases - his Coal-mine gases and Ventilation, 1878, was for a considerable time the standard text-book on the subject. He returned to Wales where he became analyst to the county of Glamorgan and the towns of Cardiff and Newport. He died suddenly in London, 3 March 1914. He was a naturalist, and left his extensive collection of insects to the National Museum of Wales.
