ROGERS, DAVID (1783 - 1824), Wesleyan minister and author

Born at Garth, Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd. He was convinced under the ministry of Edward Jones of Bathafarn (1778 - 1837) in 1800 and was, therefore, one of the first-fruits of the Welsh Wesleyan mission. He began to preach c. 1803, and was made a circuit minister in 1805. He served in the following circuits: Denbigh (1805), Caernarvon (1806-7), Llandeilo (1808), Caerphilly (1809-10), Llanidloes (1811), London (1812-3), Brecon (1814, bi-lingual), Caernarvon (1815), Holyhead and Beaumaris (1816-7), Machynlleth and Dolgelley (1818), Newtown (1819-20), and after that in various English circuits until his death at Darlington in January 1824. He had wide interests, which were reflected in Yr Eurgrawn Wesleyaidd during the period when he was its editor (1812-4). Apart from his articles in that periodical, he published Cyfiawn had trwy Ffydd, 1818, and edited the 1812 version of his denomination's hymn-book; he also edited a part of the 1817 version. He was elected chairman of the Welsh province (1816-8) in succession to Owen Davies. He is said to have been one of the most influential of the early Wesleyan preachers.
