Born 9 January 1862 at Dafen, Llanelly. The family moved to Pontardulais and the son was for some time employed at the Hendy tin-plate works. After he had started to preach he went to T. Richards's school at Aberavan and, in 1880, was admitted to Pontypool Academy. He won a scholarship to the University College at Bangor, the year it was opened and graduated B.A. (London) with honours in Greek. In 1886 he was appointed tutor in classics at the Baptist College, Llangollen, and became principal of that college (after it had moved to Bangor) in 1896. He had already, in 1888, obtained the M.A. degree of London University. He was considered a good scholar in the language and literature of the New Testament and was a member of the committee appointed by the University of Wales to bring out a new Welsh translation of the New Testament. He was editor of Seren Gomer for ten years. He was a thoughtful preacher but made no effort to be popular. He wrote voluminously to the various periodicals. He died 25 July 1923 and was buried in Sardis chapel burial-ground, Llanedy.
