son of Sir Thomas Morgan of Pen-coed and Langstone, Glamorganshire, and Cecilia, daughter of Sir George Herbert of Swansea. In 1569 he went to France to fight as a volunteer in the Protestant army. After having been engaged in several skirmishes in that country and in the Netherlands he returned to England in time to join the earl of Essex in his Irish ventures. In 1574 he was knighted by Elizabeth at the earl's request but suffered such severe financial losses while he was in Ireland that he was compelled in 1577 to sell his estate. He spent a considerable portion of the next seven years fighting the Irish, and died in 1584. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Andrew Judde, an alderman of the city of London, but they had no children.
