LLOYD, DAVID (died 1747?), cleric and translator

He was ordained deacon 27 May 1711, and priest 15 June 1712, by the bishop of Llandaff. He is described as a student of Jesus College, Oxford, on the first occasion, and a B.A. of that college on the second occasion (Llandaff subscription books). The only person of this name to have graduated at Jesus College, 1711/12, is given as ' David Lloyde, son of Phillip Lloyde of St. David's, Pembroke, matriculated 2 December, 1707, aged 19, B.A. 24 March 1711/12, M.A. 1714 ' (Foster, Alumni Oxonienses). He was instituted to Llandefalle, Brecknock, 3 December 1713, and to Cefnllys, Radnorshire, 3 October 1717, both in the diocese of St Davids. He held these livings until his death (in 1747?).

Lloyd was a friend and patron of Howel Harris in Harris's early days; Harris's diaries evince affection for him, and record that he dined with him. Later on, however, the vicar felt that Harris's behaviour smelt of 'schism,' and in 1741-3 interesting letters passed between them - Trevecka letters 330, 331, 339, 343, 822, 850, 918 (copious extracts in chapter xii of H. J. Hughes's Life of Harris).

His Ymadrodd ynghylch Dychymygion Dynion yn Addoliad Duw, is a translation of A Discourse concerning the Inventions of Man in the Worship of God, by W. King, 1694. He died before October 1747.
