Born 5 September 1843, son of the Rev. D. Owen, originally of Darowen, Montgomeryshire, and his wife Sophia (Jeffries), of Bridgnorth. Although he was not born in Wales (but in the Midlands) Lloyd-Owen was Welsh by blood and interests, claiming descent from the old Welsh family associated with Mathafarn, Montgomeryshire; see the pedigree registered by him in the College of Arms. His medical training was received at the General Hospital at Birmingham, and in Paris. Besides obtaining the usual medical degrees he won that of M.D. (Birmingham).
He became a house surgeon in the Birmingham Eye Hospital in 1865 and thereafter specialised in diseases of the eye, becoming one of the best-known English eye specialists. He was a member of numerous medical (particularly ophthalmic) societies - he became vice-president of the Ophthalmic Society of Great Britain; he also wrote books (e.g. The Function of Vision and Pain in Eye Diseases) and contributed papers to professional journals.
Although the greater part of his professional life was spent in Birmingham he maintained a very close connection with Wales, particularly with Montgomeryshire, Aberystwyth, and Harlech. He corresponded much on historical and genealogical matters relating to Wales (and particularly, Montgomeryshire) with many of his Welsh contemporaries, particularly with Richard Bennett; he was also a member of several Welsh societies - there are contributions by him in Montgomeryshire Collections, published by the Powys-land Club. His manuscript collections (now NLW MS 5986-6023 ) give some indication of the nature and scope of his interests. Among them are copies of parish registers and other records, etc., together with transcripts of three books published by his great-grandfather John Owen (1757 - 1829).
He married (1868) Anna, daughter of John Green, M.R.C.S., Muxton, Salop. He died on Christmas Day, 1925, at his home, Bron-y-graig, Harlech.
