Born 2 July 1830 at Ffynnonddwrgi, Cwm-coy, Cardiganshire. He was apprenticed to a carpenter but began to preach when he was 17 years of age. He went to Newcastle Emlyn grammar school and later, for a time, to a school at Cardigan. In 1850 he was admitted to Brecon College and was one of the first to pass the London University matriculation examination; he was, however, prevented by ill-health from taking a degree. In 1854 he was ordained minister of Graig chapel, Machynlleth; he retired in 1910. His wife was a great-granddaughter of Williams of Pantycelyn. He was one of the principal founders of the Union of Welsh Independents, and was its first secretary in 1872; in 1892 he became its chairman. In the ' War of the Constitutions ' he was fiercely opposed to Michael D. Jones and his party. He published memoirs of Azariah Shadrach, 1863, and of Edward Williams (1818 - 1880) of Dinas Mawddwy, 1886. He died 27 April 1915 and was buried at Machynlleth.
