JONES, JOHN (1807 - 1875), Calvinistic Methodist minister

Born 4 October 1807 at Melin Blaenpistyll, Llangoedmor, Cardiganshire, son of Samuel and Charlotte Jones. While still very young, his parents went to live at Cytir-bach, near Blaenannerch. He was given a little education in the local day school and later in a school at Cardigan.

His interest in preaching started when he was a boy, and in 1833, after experiencing a profound religious emotion, he himself began to preach. He soon made a name for himself and began to tour the country as was usual in those days. He was ordained at the Llangeitho Association, 1841. In 1842 he married Mrs. James of Canllufaes, and lived at that place and at Cytir-bach until he built his own house near Blaenannerch, south Cardiganshire. He was in the field for over forty years, and no one in Wales was held in higher esteem, in Associations or other preaching-festivals, than 'Old Blaenannerch,' as he was called. His resonant voice and sweeping, fiery eloquence dominated his congregations everywhere.

He died 14 January 1875 and was buried in front of Blaenannerch chapel.
