Born 9 June 1800 in the parish of Lampeter Velfrey, Pembrokeshire. He lost his father when he was very young and he and his three brothers were brought up by their grandfather, who gave them a good education. At the age of seventeen he was admitted member at Henllan Amgoed, where he began to preach. Lady Barham took an interest in him and in 1822 sent him to the Academy at Newport Pagnell, Bucksinghamshire. He was ordained minister of Banbury Independent church, 25 April 1827, moving to London, 15 August 1832, to take charge of New Broad Street church, where he remained until his death, 22 October 1842; he was buried in Abney Park, London. He and Caleb Morris were bosom friends. In 1832 he published a volume containing twelve lectures on Christ's person - this was entitled What think ye of Christ? The peace movement was his chief interest; in 1837 he became joint secretary of the Peace Society and for some time edited The Herald of Peace. He also did much work for the Moravians.
