Born at Swansea. When 19 years of age he entered Hoxton Theological Institution, London. In 1837 he was appointed to India, but was shipwrecked on the coast of Coromandel and suffered incredible privations. Applying himself to the study of literature and dialects, he soon became a recognized scholar in Tamul and Sanskrit, and rendered great service to the Bible Society in publishing the Scriptures in Tamul.
