He was born 23 June 1833, at Treuddyn, near Mold (according to Methodistiaeth sir Fflint and Y Goleuad, but at Caerwys according to C. and D. Herald, Y Traethodydd and Geninen, and at Bangor according to Y Celt and Y Cymro). He was the son and grandson on both sides of Calvinistic Methodist ministers. During 1846 he lived at Bangor, and was secretary of the ' Gomeryddion Society.' He studied at Bala under Lewis Edwards from 1847 until 1850, when he emigrated with his parents to Racine, Wisconsin. There he graduated B.S. in 1854 and A.B. in 1856. His interests were mainly political at this time, and he was elected member of the Wisconsin Legislature in 1856. The following year he moved to Cincinnati, and became one of the editors of the Cincinnati Gazette. Soon afterwards, however, he entered Lane Seminary to prepare for the ministry with the Presbyterians, and in 1860 he was ordained and became pastor of Lane Seminary church. In 1862 (1863 ?) he was appointed professor of Church history at Lane, in 1867 professor of Biblical history, in 1871 professor of Hebrew, and in 1873 (1875 ?) professor of New Testament. He was associate editor of the Princeton Review and published numerous articles on Biblical subjects. H. P. Smith, a noted U.S.A. Hebraist of the time, wrote of him that he was 'one of the most exemplary and earnest, as well as one of the most scholarly and brilliant men in the American ministry' (see Preaching Christ, a volume of sermons by Evans, published posthumously, 1893). In 1891 he was invited to the chair of Hebrew and Old Testament at Bala Theological College, but he died at Colwyn Bay on 25 July 1892, before taking up his duties, and was buried at Cincinnati in September He was the author of 'Gwir Werth Addysg,' in Y Drysorfa, 1852; Notes and Additions to Lange's (Zockler ?) Commentary on Job, New York, 1874; ' Cristionogaeth Bersonol,' in Y Drysorfa, 1892; Preaching Christ, 1893; Poems, Addresses, and Essays, 1893 (the last two posthumous).
