Born at Trawsfynydd, Meironnydd. A skilled player of the 'telyn deir-res' (triple harp), he was considered the best Welsh folk-song player of his time. He met his death by drowning in the river Dysynni, near Towyn, Meironnydd, 5 August 1774, and was buried in Towyn churchyard.
