ELLIS, ELLIS ab (fl. 1685-1726), cleric and poet

Name: Ellis Ab Ellis
Gender: Male
Occupation: cleric and poet
Area of activity: Poetry; Religion
Author: Gildas Tibbott

Several biographical dictionaries have erred in dating him a century earlier. Nothing is known of his family or of his early connections, although the title above a series of englynion by him in NLW MS 255A states that he was born in the parish of Llandrillo, Meironnydd. He held the perpetual curacy of Eglwys Rhos, Caernarfonshire, for nearly thirty-two years; his first entry in the parish register was made on 14 May 1693 and his last on 28 March 1725. Llandudno also was under his charge.

He wrote poetry in the strict and the free metres. ' Cywydd i'r Arian ' was published in Dyfyrwch ir Cymru neu Ddewisol Ganiadau (Dublin, n.d.), and in Y Gwladgarwr, iv, 18; ' Hanes y Byd ' in Thomas Jones's Almanac, 1685; and 'Carol Plygain,' 1710, 'Hanes Llundain,' and 'Gofal Cybydd am ei Ferch,' in Blodeu-Gerdd Cymry, 1759. Some of these poems, as well as various englynion by him, are preserved in the following manuscripts: NLW MS 9B , NLW MS 255A , NLW MS 432B , NLW MS 434B , NLW MS 436B , NLW MS 653B , NLW MS 2621C , NLW MS 3487E , NLW MS 10744B , NLW MSS 13063B ; Cwrtmawr MS 5B ; Cardiff 47, 64; Swansea 3 (155); B.M. Add. MSS. 14875, 14987, 14992. He translated a short prose work, Britain's Timely Warning, into Welsh under the title Cofiadur Prydlon Lloegr (Shrewsbury, Stafford Prys, 1761).
