Born 14 January 1655, second son of Thomas Price, Giler, Cerrigydrudion, by his wife Margaret, daughter and heiress of Thomas Wynne of Bwlchybeudy in the same parish. From Ruthin school he went to S. John's College, Cambridge, 28 March 1672; he left without graduating, was admitted to Lincoln's Inn,

October 1787 at Pencaerelin in Llanfihangel Bryn Pabuan, Brecknock, the younger son of Rice Price, vicar of Llanwrthyl in that county from 1789 to his death in 1810, and of Mary Bowen of Pencaerelin, the daughter of a vicar. In his home he heard not only the songs and traditions of the peasantry but also the cywyddau of Dafydd ap Gwilym and occasionally the strains of the harp. He attended
