second son of Owain Tudor and Catherine de Valois, widow of Henry V; for the circumstances of his parents' marriage, see the article on Owain Tudor. Born at Hatfield, Hertfordshire, he was brought up at the convent of Barking, Essex, with his elder brother, Edmund, and their interests appear to have been fostered under the kindly eye of their royal half-brother, Henry VI.
