HUW MENAI (fl. 16th c.), musician at the eisteddfod held at Caerwys, 2 July 1523, he graduated as a disgybl disgyblaidd - a pupil to pursue a course of instruction, having mastered the initial steps - but he rejected the grade.
HUW PENNANT (fl. c. 1565-1619), poet , Brynkir, Cefnamwlch, Cefnllanfair, Clenennau, Corsygedol, Glynllifon, Llyweni, Madryn, Myfyrian, Mysoglen, Penrhyn, Plas Du in Eifionydd, Plas Newydd in Anglesey, Porthamel, Rhiwedog, Rhiwlas and Ystumcegid. HUW, ROLANT (1714 - 1802), poet note to ' William Saunderson ') and in Cymru (O.M.E.), i, 108-10, 197-8; and more remains in manuscript at the National Library of Wales. He was buried 16 December 1802 at Llangower, aged eighty-eight.
HYWEL ab OWAIN GWYNEDD (d. 1170), soldier and poet buried at Bangor. Hywel is probably better known as a poet. He was pre-eminent in his day as a lyric poet. He was not restricted as to subject matter as were the professional court bards; he sang of love and of the natural beauty of his native Gwynedd. Eight of his poems survive; they are printed in The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales, i, 275-8.
HYWEL ap 'Syr' MATHEW (d. 1581), poet, genealogist, and soldier A native of the Teme valley in Radnorshire. His poetry includes cywyddau written to bishop Richard Davies, William Herbert, earl of Pembroke, Mathew ap Morus of Ceri, Siencyn ap Dafydd of Llanarthney, and an awdl to Lewys Gwyn of Glyn Nedd (Neath) (Llanstephan MS 133 (71, 712), Llanstephan MS 30 (384); Hafod MS. 13 (197); Brogyntyn MS. 2 (529)). HYWEL YSTORM (or YSTORYN) (fl. first half of the 14th century), clerwr or composer of lampoons In Mostyn MS. 118 (509) his name is given as 'Ystoryn,' but in R.B.H. Poetry, col. 1337 we find 'Ystorym' above a scurrilous poem of his to 'Adam the tinker.' G. J. Williams (in Traddodiad Llenyddol Morgannwg, 6-8) attributes to him all the anonymous abusive verse which follows to the end of col. 1348, and on these grounds he makes him contemporary with Casnodyn - see col. 1341, 1. 42. IEUAN ap RHYDDERCH ap IEUAN LLWYD (fl. 1430-1470), gentleman and poet Vychan ap Ieuan ap Rhys ap Llawdden,' and (2) ' Mawd, daughter of Sir William Clement, lord of Tregaron.' It is difficult to decide whether there were two men called Rhydderch ap Ieuan Llwyd, or whether the poet's father married a third time. Ieuan is usually connected with two districts in Cardiganshire, but the earliest extant manuscripts link him with Genau'r Glyn rather than with the vale of Aeron
IEUAN DU'R BILWG (fl. c. 1470), poet No details concerning his life are known, but three interesting poems by him remain, these being (1) ' Cywydd y Gown Coch ', (2) a begging ' Llyfr y Greal ' (see Cywyddau'r Ychwanegiad, 144) from the abbot of Glyn Nedd, and (3) a cywydd in which the poet seeks the whereabouts of Llywelyn Goch y Dant from a woman winnowing barley.
IEUAN LLWYD BRYDYDD (fl. c. 1460-1490), poet some examples of whose work remain in manuscript. These include an elegiac cywydd to Ifan ap Tudur ap Gruffudd Llwyd of Henllan parish, Denbighshire, a cywydd to Hywel Coetmor, and a 'blind man's cywydd.' IEUAN LLWYD SIEFFRAI (fl. c. 1599-1619), poet eldest son, Sieffrai Llwyd (1607 - 1626), was murdered at Dôl-y-cletwr, Rhiwedog, and the inheritance descended through the second son, Morus (born 1619). Ieuan Llwyd Sieffrai, antiquary, genealogist and poet, was one of the literary gentry. He died 8 July 1639, and was buried in Llandderfel cemetery. IEUAN TEW Two poets bore this name: (1) IEUAN TEW BRYDYDD HEN (fl. c. 1400-40), a native of Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire, and (2) IEUAN TEW BRYDYDD IEUANC, a native of Arwystli, Montgomeryshire, who fl. c. 1560-90, graduated at the eisteddfod held at Caerwys in 1568 - Peniarth MS 121 (215) and Peniarth MS 132 (61) - and is said to have been buried at Llanidloes. ILLINGWORTH, LESLIE GILBERT (1902 - 1979), political cartoonist Leslie Illingworth was born on 2 September 1902 in Harbour Road, Barry, the youngest son of Richard Illingworth, a quantity surveyor from Cheshire, and his wife Helen (née MacGregor), a teacher from Yorkshire.
