A contemporary of

Rowland
, Llangeitho, and one of the Evangelical school. He was educated at S. Edmund Hall, Oxford, and was rector of Sharncote (not Escourt), Wiltshire, for twenty-seven years, 1765-92 (see J. Owen, Memoir of
Daniel
Rowland
, 179). He heard
Daniel
Rowland
preach and his description of the preacher is probably the best on record. He translated into English eight of

Born at Pantybeudy, Nantcwnlle, Cardiganshire, son of
Daniel
and Janet
Rowland
- his father holding the living of Nantcwnlle and Llan-geitho. According to tradition, he was educated at Hereford grammar school. He was ordained deacon in 1734 and priest in 1735, and became his brother John's curate in the above-mentioned places. In 1734 he married Eleanor Davies of Caer-llugest. He experienced a

(1733 - 1776), Methodist exhorter
Born in 1733 at Bwrcwd, in the parish of Ysgeifiog, Flintshire. His parents, who were natives of Aberdaron, Llŷn, had four children - John, Humphrey, Sarah, and Ann. John was a carpenter by trade but was also a gifted poet and, in his younger days, had written interludes and been a popular actor. About 1672, after hearing

Born c. 1711, a native of Cwm Ebwy-fawr, Aberystruth, Monmouthshire. He was converted under the ministry of Howel Harris, c. 1738, and is said to have seceded from the communion of the Church of England when

was forbidden to preach in Aberystruth church. He began to write hymns, and comes to our notice as one of the early hymn-writers of the Methodist revival. A hymn written by
RICHARD, JOHN
(fl. 1743-1784), Calvinistic Methodist exhorter, and hymn-writer
who lived at Llansamlet, Glamorganshire. He is referred to as an exhorter at the Llanddeusant Association of 1743, and his progress can be traced for many years. When the split occurred between Howel Harris and
Daniel
Rowland
, he allied himself with the former but, shortly afterwards, left him and joined the
Rowland
party. He is known to have been present at the Llangeitho Association in 1778
WILLIAMS, JOHN
(1747 - 1831), Methodist cleric
Born 1747 at Penwern-hir, near Pontrhyd-fendigaid, Cardiganshire, son of William Rees Mathias and Ann, his wife. He was educated at Ystrad Meurig and Carmarthen grammar school; ordained deacon in 1770 and priest in 1771; appointed curate of Lledrod and Llanwnnws, where he came under the influence of the local Methodist clergymen - Williams of Llanfair Cludogau and

Born in Llangeitho parsonage, son of
Daniel
Rowland
. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated B.A. 1771, and M.A. 1774. He was ordained deacon at Oxford. 26 May 1771, and a priest in London 21 September 1773. He was curate of Stock (Essex) from 1771 until his marriage in 1776 to Margaret, daughter of Howel Davies and went to live at Parcau, Henllan Amgoed, on the borders of
EVANS, EVAN
(1758 - 1828), Calvinistic Methodist minister
Born in 1758, he lived at Y Ffos, Llanwrtyd, Brecknock. His parents were Baptists, but he joined the Methodists in 1775 and was baptized at Llangeitho by
Daniel
Rowland
. He began to preach in 1778, but was never in the front rank of preachers. He was the means of getting land on which to build many chapels in Brecknock. He was selected by his county to be ordained, as representing it, at the
ROWLAND(S), ELLIS
(1621 - 1691), early nonconformist
.' In 1666 we find Philip Henry sending him copies of Baxter's Call to be distributed. His house was licensed under the 1672 Act of Indulgence, yet, strangely, we find no mention of him in Henry Maurice's report of 1665 nor in Dr.
Daniel
Williams's report to the Fund Board in 1690. John Pinney (another ejected minister) stayed with
Rowland
at Caernarvon in January 1688 (Letters of John Pinney, 1929
OWEN, JOHN
(1788 - 1867), cleric and author
, Leicester, and Thrussington (Leicestershire), becoming vicar of Thrussington in 1845 (and rural dean in 1853); he was buried at Thrussington on 31 July 1867. He published memoirs of
Daniel
Rowland
(Llangeitho) and Thomas Jones, Creaton (1752 - 1845), and commentaries.
EDWARDS, DAVID
(1660 - 1716), Independent minister
circuit, namely Crug-y-maen, Llwyn-rhys, and Cilgwyn. He died 29 September 1716, aged 56, and in his will left books to the ministers, Philip Pugh and Jenkin Jones (1695 - 1725) - (see Jones family of Llwyn-rhys), who were at the time his colleagues in the circuit. His grand-daughter Elinor married
Daniel
Rowland
of Llangeitho.
MORGAN, REES
(1764 - 1847), Calvinistic Methodist preacher
. He worked in close association with
Daniel
Rowland
, Williams of Pantycelyn, and other leaders of the Methodist revival. He died 6 April 1847 and was buried in Talley churchyard. He should not be confused with Rhys Morgan of Glancledan-fawr, Llanwrtyd, who was a Methodist exhorter in the earliest days of the revival.
