JONES, REES CRIBIN (1841 - 1927), Unitarian minister and teacher

Born at Talgarreg Mill, Cardiganshire, 9 September 1841, one of four children. David Jones, his father, was from Rhandir, Talgarreg, and his mother was from Caer-foel, Ystrad. At one time a shepherd, he was educated at Dewi Hefin's school, Cribyn, John Davies's school at the Three Horse Shoes, Cribyn, Pont-siân school (1860-63), and the Presbyterian College, Carmarthen (1863-67). He conducted services occasionally at Cefncoedycymer Unitarian church and he was minister of the churches at Bridgend and Betws (1867-68), Cribyn (1869-76), Caeronnen (1871-1915), Ty'nrheol and Brondeifi (1874-1915) - the last three churches in the Lampeter district. During the period of his ministry (1867-1915) he was instrumental in founding the church at Ty'nrheol (1874) and building the chapel there and at Brondeifi (1876), together with a house and a schoolroom. He prepared eight young men for the ministry: J. Hathren Davies, D.J. Williams, T.J. Jenkins, E.O. Jenkins, D. Rhoslwyn Davies, J. Carrara Davies, J.E. Jones, D. Cellan Davies. Until 1879 he ran a school as well as ministering at Newton Nottage, at Cribyn and at Lampeter. He was a 'public figure' at Lampeter, serving as a member of the Local Board, School Board and the Board of Guardians. He was interested in spiritualism. Watcyn Samuel Jones (1877 - 1964) was a child of his first marriage to Mari Jones (10 January 1873). She died on 11 March 1898. His second wife, Mary Ann, died on 8 February 1945 and he himself died on 11 August 1927. His son dedicated his book, Helyntion hen bregethwr a'i gyfoedion, 1940, to his stepmother.
