Born at Corris 22 August 1886, son of H. Williams (‘Ap Idris’) and Sarah, his wife. Educated at Corris Board School, Towyn County School, Hull Municipal Training College (1913-15), ‘D.J.’ started teaching at Corris as monitor, afterwards pupil-teacher. He taught as Uncertificated Assistant at Newbridge, Monmouth 1905-08, Uncertificated Head at Cwm Abergeirw (1908-10), Bronaber (1910-13), as Qualified Assistant at Corwen (1919), as Qualified Head at Llawrybetws (1919-20), Llandderfel (1920-31), Llanbedr (1931-48). He retired 31 August 1948. He married Lena Williams of Llanuwchllyn in 1922. He died suddenly at a meeting of Meirionethshire Education Committee at Dolgellau 1 February 1950 and was buried at Llanuwchllyn 4 February 1950.
He published a large number of books for use in schools, such as Cyfres Chwedl a Chân (6 vols.); Llyfrau Ysgrifennu Cymraeg (6 vols.) He also made a comprehensive collection of books for children. He was co-editor of Meirionnydd, a magazine for the Merioneth branch of Urdd Gobaith Cymru; founder and editor of Hwyl, a Welsh comic for children. He won several prizes for literary work in the national eisteddfod, and he was a member of the Eisteddfod Council.
