Born 21 November 1901 in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire, the son of Lewis Treharne and his wife Ethel Mary (née Hill) of Melksham, Wiltshire. He was educated at Ashton-in-Makerfield grammar school and the University of Manchester (B.A., 1922 and University postgraduate prize and studentship; M.A., 1923 and Langton Fellowship; Ph.D., 1925). He was appointed assistant lecturer at the University of Manchester in 1925, and was promoted lecturer in 1927. In 1930 he was appointed to the chair of history at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, where he spent the rest of his life and where he was much respected. He was elected F.R.Hist.S. in 1932. He was prominent in the Historical Association and was its president, 1958-61. He delivered the Raleigh Lecture to the British Academy in 1954. He held a Leverhulme Research Fellowship, 1946-47, and was visiting professor at the universities of Otago and Canterbury, New Zealand, in 1965. He was editor of History from 1947 to 1956. He published a number of standard books on history and numerous articles; amongst them The Baronial plan of reform 1258 to 1263 (1932), The Battle of Lewes in English history (1964), The Glastonbury legends (1967), Essays on thirteenth-century England (1971), and editions of Muir's historical atlases. He was vice-principal of U.C.W. Aberystwyth, 1952-54, and again in 1957; he held the office with dignity. He was an excellent lecturer who did much to raise the standard of the college's department of history which had been quite low before his arrival there as a young man.

In 1928 he married Ellen, daughter of Arthur Roberts, Tyldesley, Lancashire. She was active in the life of the town and college and was generous in her hospitality to students. She was a Justice of the Peace for many years. They had one daughter. Professor Treharne died 3 July 1967.
