ROWLANDS, EDWARD DAVID (1880 - 1969), schoolmaster and author

Born 25 November 1880 at Ty'n-y-fron, Llanuwchllyn, Merionethshire, son of Ellis Rowlands and his wife Catrin (née Edwards). He was educated at the board school, Llanuwchllyn, the grammar school, Bala, and the Normal College, Bangor (1899-1901). He began his teaching career at Troed-yr-Allt school, Pwllheli (1901-08) and afterwards became headmaster of the elementary schools in Chwilog (1908-27) and Llandudno Junction (1927-45). As well as being a dedicated schoolmaster, he was also active in Welsh literary circles. He published the following works: Prif-feirdd Eifionydd (1914); Dial y Lladron (1934; 'a popular children's novel based on life in remote parts' - a prize-winner at the national eisteddfod in Port Talbot, 1932); Bro'r Eisteddfod (1947; published by the Committee of the National Eisteddfod, Colwyn Bay); Dyffryn Conwy a'r Creuddyn (1948) and Atgofion am Lanuwchllyn (1975; some inhabitants of his home area were responsible for publishing this volume). He also took an active part in the public life of the districts where he had lived and was Mayor of Conwy 1939-40. Some of his MSS. are in the library of University of Wales, Bangor (20,663-8).

He married in 1906 Jennie Ellen Jones, Caernarfon (died 1950), and two children were born to them, a son and daughter. He died in Llandudno 26 April 1969 and was buried in Conwy churchyard.
