JONES, THOMAS IVOR (1896 - 1969), solicitor

Born July 13, 1896 at Caergai, Llanuwchllyn, Merionethshire, the seventh child of John Morris and Jane Jones (the latter born at Cefngwyn, Llanuwchllyn). Educated at the village school, Llanuwchllyn, Bala County School and Towyn County School, which was then attracting pupils from a large area, he also owed much to the Rev. Owen Ellis, the Presbyterian minister at Llanuwchllyn, and Mrs Ellis. Articled to Thomas Davies Jones, his mother's brother, he was admitted solicitor in 1921, and joined his uncle's firm, T.D. Jones and Co. of Fleet Street, London, carrying on the practice after his uncle's death for the rest of his life. A faithful and hard-working member at Charing Cross Road Welsh Presbyterian church (in particular as a Sunday school teacher for many years), he was elected elder in 1930, he was soon Joint Secretary and for many years Treasurer. He was also Chairman, and for many years Treasurer, of the London Presbytery. Always interested in the welfare of young people coming to London, he was one of the founders of the Young Wales Association subsequently the London-Welsh Association, where he held many offices. He was Chairman of the Council in 1924 (the Association's fourth year), 1939 and 1946 and for many years one of the two Honorary Legal Advisers of the Association. He was one of the Trustees appointed by Sir Howell J. Williams in 1937, to hold the properties which Sir Howell had provided in Grays Inn Road for the purposes of a London-Welsh Centre, and retained that responsibility until his death. He was also active in many other London - Welsh interests, in particular Undeb y Cymdeithasau and the Welsh School, but above all perhaps in the Merionethshire Society. He assisted Sir Ifan ab Owen Edwards and Lady Edwards with legal work in the formation of Urdd Gobaith Cymru, and remained its legal adviser. He also assisted Sir David James with legal work and was a member of the Pantyfedwen Trust. He married Jane Gwyneth, the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas Hughes, of Solway, Buarth, Aberystwyth. Never one to seek the limelight, he was a quiet man but with mischievous humour and a steadfast nature. He died 29 March 1969, aged 72, and was buried at Llanuwchllyn.
