Born 30 May 1866; son of Griffith and Elizabeth Hughes, at Tanygrisiau, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Merionethshire. After leaving the board school he became a postman for a period, and then a clerk in a solicitor's office at Blaenau Ffestiniog. From there he went to Porthmadoc to the office of Messrs. William and David Lloyd George. He lived at the time at Pentrefelin and it was at Cedron chapel there that he began to preach. He was educated at Clynnog, Bangor, and Bala; and later, when minister at Cardigan, he went to Leipzig university where he graduated M.A., Ph.D. He was ordained in 1895. He married Mya, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Walter Lewis, Llangadog, and they had 6 children. He served ministries at Bethlehem Green, Neath (1894-96); Cardigan, (1896-1917); Parkfield, Birkenhead (1917-36). He delivered the Davies Lecture on ' Worship ' in 1935 and was elected Moderator of the General Assembly for 1936. He was editor of Y Drysorfa from 1934 to 1938. He died 25 June 1944, a few months after his wife, and was buried at Llangadog.
He came to prominence initially as a poet, publishing four volumes of poems at an early age. In the second of these his well-known hymns 'Pwy a'm dwg i'r ddinas gadarn', and 'Fy Nhad o'r Nef, O! gwrando 'nghri', were first published. In addition to the poems he published Yr Athro o Ddifrif, 1903, Cofiant a Phregethau'r Parch. Griffith Davies, Aberteifi (jointly with Dr. J. Cynddylan Jones), Llewyrch y Cwmwl, Anfarwoldeb yr Enaid, A New Method for the study of the German Language, Pedair Cymwynas Pantycelyn, 1922; Mr. Saunders Lewis a Williams Pantycelyn, 1928, Addoli, 1935, Pregethau Moelwyn, 1925. He was very acceptable as a lecturer and preacher.
