Son of Thomas and Mary Roberts, Garthmorthin, Treflys, between Portmadoc and Criccieth, Caernarfonshire - he hailed from the family of ' Dafydd y Garreg Wen '. When he was about 20 years of age, he went to live at Ty-mawr, Treflys, the home of Griffith Roberts, an uncle, and spent the remainder of his days there, unmarried. He was a zealous member of the Cefnymeusydd literary society - see Ellis Owen, Cefnymeusydd. He died 19 June 1876, and was buried in Treflys churchyard. Poems by him are preserved in NLW MS 1010C .
