ROBERTS, JOHN (1753 - 1834), Calvinistic Methodist minister

Born at Blaen-y-garth, Nantlle Vale, brother of the remarkable preacher, Robert Roberts (1762 - 1802) of Clynnog. He worked for some time in Cilgwyn quarry but, after having had a little education, kept a school in various places, being known for many years as 'John Roberts, Lanllyfni.' He began to preach when he was 27 years of age. After marrying Mrs. Lloyd of Cefn Nannau, Llangwm, Denbighshire, he made his home in that neighbourhood. He was ordained minister at the first Calvinistic Methodist ordination, 1811; and from 1809 until he died 3 November 1834, at the age of 82, continued to live at Llangwm. He was a short man but possessed a strong constitution. He took part in the preparation of the Calvinistic Methodist Confession of Faith and the Rules of Discipline in 1823, and was regarded as a very able organizer and secretary. Although he had not the fiery eloquence of his brother, Robert Roberts, he was a powerful and fluent preacher, and there were not many who preached so regularly and for so many years in the Association meetings of his denomination both in North and South Wales as he did. He was born 8 August 1753; Michael Roberts was his son.
