MYTTON, JOHN (1796 - 1834), sportsman and eccentric

Born 30 September 1796, son of John Mytton, Halston Hall, Salop (compare next article). Expelled from Westminster (1811) and Harrow (1812), he became cornet in the 7th Hussars, 1816; on coming of age he succeeded to estates in Salop and at Dinas Mawddwy, Meironnydd, with a rent roll of £18,000 per annum. In 1819 he was elected Member of Parliament for Shrewsbury, but only made one appearance in the House of Commons, for half an hour, and did not seek re-election in 1820. In 1831 he stood for the county as a Reform candidate but withdrew before the poll closed. He was high sheriff for Merioneth in 1821. After a career of senseless extravagance bordering upon madness (he would give sums ranging from half-crowns to half-guineas to the children at Dinas Mawddwy for rolling down Moel Dinas), he died in the King's Bench debtors' prison, London, 29 March 1834. He married (1) Harriet Emma, daughter of Sir Tyrwhitt Jones, who died 1820, and (2) Caroline Mallet Giffard, who left him.
