Born March 1838 at Coity, near Bridgend, Glamorganshire, the son of an organist. He travelled widely. In 1878 he took part in concerts in Germany with Joachim and Madame Schumann.

From 1883 until 1897 he was a music instructor in New York. He went to Germany again in 1897, and died there 21 December 1898.
