Born at Brymbo 10 August 1834, son of John Robert Jones (Alltud Glyn Maelor, 1800 - 1881), he became a member of Brymbo Baptist church on 4 December 1853, started to preach on 25 November 1855, and was admitted to Haverfordwest Academy in July 1858. He was ordained to the charge of Pen-y-fron, Flintshire, in 1860, and subsequently moved to Bargoed, 1864; Hermon, Fishguard, 1869; Castle Street, London, 1883; and once again at the end of 1884 to Hermon, Fishguard, where he remained until his death on 24 March 1895. He was buried in Hermon burial ground. His wife predeceased him by a year, and he left two sons. His denomination honoured him with the chair of the Welsh Baptist Union, 1894. He was a man of wide reading, and his preaching was remarkable for the philosophical nature of his sermons. A volume of these sermons, entitled Yr Angel Mawr a'r Llyfr Bychan (Llangollen, 1899), was edited by T. T. Jones, Cardiff, and a selection of his sayings appeared under the title of Drychfeddyliau Detholedig (London, 1907). He was also well known as a lecturer on such subjects as 'Prometheus,' 'John Bunyan,' and 'Charles Dickens.'
