JONES, EDMUND OSBORNE (1858 - 1931), cleric

Born at Barmouth, 24 September 1858, second son of John Jones, rector of Llanaber with Barmouth, and Adelaide his wife. He was educated at Dolgelley grammar school and Friars School, Bangor, under the headmaster-ship of D. L. Lloyd. He matriculated at Oxford in October 1876, as a Postmaster of Merton College, was placed in the first class in classical Moderations in 1878, and in the third class in Litterae Humaniores in 1880, when he took his B.A. After teaching at Trowbridge grammar school for some years, he was ordained deacon by the bishop of Ely in 1885 and priest in 1886. He served as curate of Soham from 1885 to 1889, and then spent two years as assistant master at Christ College, Brecon. In 1891 bishop Lloyd of Bangor preferred him to the vicarage of Llanidloes, which he held till 1923; he was rural dean of Arwystli, and canon residentiary of Bangor. In 1923 he accepted the rectory of Rushton, near Kettering, which he held till his death on 11 March 1931. He married (1886), Ada Howells, by whom he had three sons (two of whom were killed in the first world war) and one daughter. In 1896 he published Welsh Lyrics of the Nineteenth Century, and in 1906 Welsh Poets of Today and Yesterday (both works being translations from Welsh).
