JONES, DAVID LLOYD (1843 - 1905), Calvinistic Methodist minister

Born 5 January 1843 at Tal-y-sarn, Caernarfonshire, son of the celebrated John Jones (1796 - 1857). He was educated at the local British school, at Clynnog school, 1860, Bala College, 1861, and Edinburgh University, 1865-9 (M.A., 1869). He experienced the emotional influence of the 1859 revival. After having been minister of China Street, Llanidloes, 1870 (he was ordained at Amlwch, 1872), he became minister of the English church at Llandinam (1875) where he remained for the rest of his life. He married (1) Sophie Williams of Bootle, 1874, and (2) Annie, daughter of the Rev. Evan Jones, 1883; he had two sons by his first marriage and four by his second. He was moderator of the North Wales C.M. Association, 1899, of the General Assembly, 1904, and chairman of the Conference of English C.M. churches, 1904. He died 15 November 1905, and was buried in the parish churchyard, Llandinam. He was a frequent contributor to periodicals such as Cymru (O.M.E.) on astronomy, geology, archaeology, and history. As a preacher he was impressive and effective, and for many years was one of the outstanding personalities of the pulpit; he did a great deal of work in the little churches of Montgomeryshire, Brecknock, and Radnor, and was revered throughout Wales, alike for his warm humanity and for his many gifts.
